Mail Monday: So You Want to be a Nurse?
I received this email from a high school student who is WAY more on the ball than I ever was in high school (I mostly was worried about my hair, my boyfriend and what I was going to wear the next day). I just love hearing from students who are working toward their goals!
Hi! I recently stumbled upon your website and I find it to be very useful! I love it! I am a sophomore in high school, and am VERY interested in nursing. (I have been for my whole life) My mom is a nurse and I hope to be one too someday! It just seems like such a rewarding career and I love helping people. I was wondering if you had any advice for me as a high school student who is planning on majoring in nursing in college. I’d love to hear from you!
My response to this lovely young lady was to get a solid foundation in the sciences and some real-world experience working with the public. This could be a volunteer job working in a hospital or a job working in the service industry such as retail or a restaurant. Learning how to juggle multiple priorities and communicate with people from all walks of life will come in handy in all aspects of your future nursing career. Good luck to this student and to all of you who are starting on your path while still in high school!
