These aren't just answers. They're a window into what dosage calc actually tests.

But before you check off your answers, here's one thing I want you to keep in mind: these ten questions weren't random. Each one was chosen to represent a different type of dosage calculation you'll encounter in nursing school and at the bedside. So as you read through the answers, pay attention to the coaching note under each one — that's where the real learning lives.

Melissa

Answer: 3 Tablets

Coaching: This looks like a simple tablet calculation, but there's a reading comprehension trap built in. The question tells you Melissa's dose changes over time — week 4 puts her in the twice-daily phase, meaning you're calculating for 300 mg total, not 150 mg. If you solved for the wrong dose, that's the most common mistake here: rushing past the clinical context to get to the math.

Calvin

Answer: 0.9 ml

Coaching: This one requires careful attention to unit conversions to ensure you've set things up correctly. Calvin's dose is ordered in micrograms, but the medication vial is labeled in milligrams. Students who miss this step will be off by a factor of 1,000. Always check that your units match and all cancel out before you multiply.

Ms. Camposagrado

Answer: 100 ml/hr

Coaching: Welcome to IV rate calculations! The key insight here is treating time as part of the equation — 30 minutes becomes 0.5 hours, which flips the rate cleanly. If you got a number that felt too high or too low, check how you handled the time conversion first.

Ms. Camposagrado

Answer: 333 mg

Coaching: Notice that Ms. Camposagrado appears twice...that's intentional. At the bedside, a single patient scenario can generate multiple calculation questions in rapid succession. Here you're calculating how much medication she received before the infusion was stopped. This type of question requires you to think in mg/min, not just total dose.

Jeremy

Answer: 1.5 tablets at 0300 (3:00 AM)

Coaching: Two skills tested in one question: the tablet calculation itself, and the ability to advance time in military clock format. Many students get the tablet math right and stumble on the clock. If 2100 + 6 hours gave you any pause, that's worth practicing because time-based questions show up constantly in clinical.

Shawna

Answer: 6.67 ml

Coaching: The loading dose in this question is a deliberate distraction. You only need the maintenance dose of 200 mg to solve the problem. The 500 mg loading dose is information you don't use. Learning to identify and set aside irrelevant data is one of the most underrated dosage calculation skills, and nursing exams test it regularly.

History of Nursing

Answer: 84.2 oz and 5 venti coffees

Coaching: Yes, this one was a little fun. 😄 But the skill is real: unit conversion across measurement systems. You had to move from grams to milligrams, then calculate volume, then apply rounding rules differently for each part of the answer (nearest tenth for ounces, round up for coffees). Multi-part questions with different rounding instructions are a staple of nursing exams, and so is calculating cumulative dose.

Elissa

Answer: 1.2 ml

Coaching: This is a reconstitution question, which trips students up because the concentration after mixing isn't printed on the label, you have to calculate it first. The vial instructions tell you to add 1.8 ml to arrive at 500 mg/2 ml. Once you establish that concentration, the rest solves like any other liquid calculation.

Riley

Answer: 0.12 ml

Coaching: This is a weight-based pediatric calculation, and the small numbers are the point. Riley weighs 830 grams (not kilograms) which means your very first step is a unit conversion before you can calculate the dose. In pediatric and neonatal nursing, this kind of precision is non-negotiable. A misplaced decimal here is a serious medication error.

Tom

Answer: 102 mcg

Coaching: This is the most clinically complex question in the set, and deliberately so. Tom is unarousable and your job is to figure out exactly how much fentanyl he's received. To do this, you have to calculate his basal dose over two hours (8 ml/hr × 2 hrs = 16 ml), add his 7 bolus doses (7 × 5 ml = 35 ml), arrive at 51 total ml, then apply the concentration (2 mcg/ml) to get 102 mcg. The math isn't the hard part. Staying organized under pressure — and recognizing that an unarousable patient with a PCA is a clinical emergency — is the real skill being tested here. Good job!
